Arrange iOS 7 Home Screen App Icons Any Way You Like With HomeScreenDesigner

11:43 AM
Customizing the user-interface of an iOS device is extremely popular in the jailbreak community. Sure, plenty of us liberate our devices with the intention of downloading and applying one or two tweaks that offer essential system improvements, but as time progresses, more and more users are starting to overhaul the UI as their first task.
The jailbreak community has always had tried and tested methods of creating and applying interesting and unique layouts for app icons, but none have been as easy to use and offer as much power and customization as the HomeScreenDesigner package that is available in Cydia.

HomeScreenDesigner-splash

HomeScreenDesigner package comes directly from the mind that originally developed the Iconoclasm Layout Maker, so we immediately know that it’ll be an extremely well polished piece of work. The experience provided by his previous tool has been rewritten from the ground up to concentrate purely on iOS 7 users and offers the ability to create, save and apply icon layouts instantly as well as upload a chosen layout to the community for others to enjoy and take advantage of. After a symmetrical layout on your device? More of a free-form layout kind of user? No problem, both are simple and quick to create.

HomeScreenDesigner-screens-1

The tool is built around a simple drag and drop interface that allows the icons to be placed in the exact desired positions. The developer has also had the foresight to preempt quite a few issues or desires that might arise from users, and has bundled a number of time-saving features in the package such as swapping the location of two icons, and being able to set exact co-ordinates of each icon. Existing layouts can be modified with relative ease as well as actually being able to create individual home screen layouts on a per page basis. If the device has four home screens of icons then each one can have a different layout.

The level of thought and polish that has gone into making this package is commendable. The fact that users don’t need to edit their own property lists or even respring to apply the layouts makes this package worth the money.

HomeScreenDesigner is a commercial package, available as a $1.99 download from the BigBoss repository. The tweak is compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and requires iOS 7.0 or higher.

iOS 7.0.4 Download For iPhone 5s, 5c, 5, 4s, 4, iPad, iPod touch Is Out! [Direct Links]

10:53 AM
Apple has just made available iOS 7.0.4 download links for compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. Apple’s new iOS 7 mobile operating system seems to have gone down well so far with users, and after a couple of minor updates amending a couple of early teething issues and security holes, the Cupertino has today delivered yet another update. You can catch the full change log, as well as the download details, right after the break.
After the release of iOS 7.0.3 some weeks ago, a follow-up was widely expected in the form of iOS 7.0.4 or 7.1.

ios-704-iphone-ipad-ipod

As per usual, there’s a dose of bug fixes, performance enhancements, and general housekeeping updates. Thus, if you’ve been experiencing any issues with your device, it’s highly recommended you go ahead and update immediately. Of course, even if you’ve not encountered any problems, it’s always best to run the latest version, since even if the aforementioned changes aren’t exactly overwhelming, the most recent release tends almost always to be the least susceptible to bugs.
Official changelog for 7.0.4 from Apple states:
Bug fixes and improvements, including a fix for an issue that causes FaceTime calls to fail for some users.

In fact, the only instance in which we would recommend holding off this release for now is for the purpose of a jailbreak — at least until we get some kind of clarification from an experienced hacker or developer. We already know that every version up to iOS 7.0.3 has been safe to update to for those holding out hope of a future untethered jailbreak, and so before you go ahead and push to iOS 7.0.4, just wait for the follow-up post that will confirm either way.
Each iOS 7-compliant device can be updated to iOS 7.0.4. This ranges from the iPad 2 and up, iPhone 4 and newer, as well as the fifth-generation iPod touch.

He has clarified it on Twitter that the Cydia build included in version 1.0 of Evasi0n 7 isn’t official, and hence will be prone to bugs. Tweaks relying on Substrate will have issues with this early release of Evasi0n. This issue will be fixed in later versions of Evasi0n 7.
Update x2: Evasi0n 7 is also compatible to work with iOS 7.1 beta 2.

Download iTunes 11.1.3 For OS X And Windows: Features Equalizer Fixes And Other Improvements

10:46 AM
Apple has today updated their iTunes software to version 11.1.3. The latest iTunes release from the Cupertino giant is an attempt to fix a number of niggling and ongoing bugs that were introduced as part of the last iteration of the software. Version 11.1.3 follows hot on the heels of the refresh to version 4.0 of Apple’s Remote app for iOS that has been refactored to work in perfect sync with iTunes 11.1.
iTunes users have been continuously filing bug reports with Apple since version 11.1 went live. The official change log that accompanies today’s release suggests that Apple has fixed a number of those reported problems including issuing a remedy for instances where the equalizer may not function exactly as the user would expect it to. The iTunes engineering team has also provided code fixes that dramatically increase the experience received when switching views with large iTunes libraries.

iTunes

iTunes 11.1.3 compliments the previous update of Apple’s popular OS X and Windows software that brought with it native support for OS X Mavericks as well as a number of language localizations. The update is nicely rounded off with the obligatory bug fixes and general improvements that seem to be present when any piece of mobile or desktop software is updated. At the time of writing, the update was still propagating through the Mac App Store servers in a number of territories but was showing up in the United States and various European stores. And some of our readers have also reported that the update is showing up for them in several different regions.
The iTunes 11.1.3 update isn’t really anything to sing and dance about and represents only a number of minor changes. However, if you are one of the many users affected by the resolved issues then it’s likely this will be a welcome installation. Ensuring total compatibility with OS X Mavericks has obviously been a priority for Apple in recent times. The pushing out of version iTunes 11.1.2 and the recent upgrade of the first-party Remote app shows that the Californian giants are still committed to giving the best possible experience to iOS device owners.
Affected users can grab the latest version from the Updates section within the Mac App Store, and Windows users can update using the Apple Software Update utility.

Tips and Tricks to make the most out of VLC on your iPhone and iPad

6:24 AM
vlc icon
VLC for iOS is one of the most popular third-party media player on the App Store, and is capable of playing almost any video format. Here are some tips and tricks that’ll help you make the most of VLC for iOS’ feature set
Add files via iTunes
One of the first things you’ll want to do after installing VLC is add video files to the app. You can do this through several ways, one of which is through iTunes. Just make sure your iPhone or iPad is connected to iTunes running on your PC/Mac, click on your device, and view the “Apps” tab. Scroll down to the File Sharing section, find VLC in the apps list and drag and drop the files you want to add to your device.
Add files via HTTP server
If the iTunes way sounds too tedious, you can simply tell VLC to start its own web server, and you can wirelessly upload files to your device using any browser connected to the same network. To start the server, open the side-menu by tapping on the VLC icon at the top-right, and then tap on WiFi Upload. Once you tap it, it should start and display the address you need to enter on your web-browser:

VLC_for_iOS_WiFi_Uploader
Download files directly from the internet
If you don’t have videos stored locally on your PC/Mac, you can even download them straight to VLC if you have a direct URL to the video. Open the side-menu, and tap on “Downloads.” You should see a URL field, where you can enter the direct URL, and VLC should start downloading it for you:

Passcode lock
Have videos you don’t want everyone to see? You can protect them with a passcode within the VLC app. To set a passcode, tap the VLC icon at the top-left, go to Settings > and turn Passcode Lock on. You’ll be asked to enter a 4 digit passcode.
vlc-1
AirPlay
VLC doesn’t natively support AirPlay video streaming, but you can still view your videos in VLC on your Apple TV by using the AirPlay mirroring option in Control Center.
Dropbox
Have a lot of videos stored in your Dropbox? VLC can download them for you and play it from the app. Open the side menu by tapping the VLC icon at the top-right, tap on Dropbox, sign-in, and you should see your In version 2.2 (not released yet), the developers plan to add Dropbox streaming and Google Drive integration.
vlc-2
Subtitles
VLC also includes support for subtitles. Some video formats natively support subtitles while for others, you need a separate .sub file. If you need to add a separate .sub file, name it similar to the video filename, and add it to VLC for iOS via any of the file transfer means described above. VLC will automatically associate the two and show you subtitles.
vlc-3
Change Audio Track
Some video formats contain multiple audio tracks, mostly for different languages. You can switch between different audio tracks by tapping the speech bubble button seen below:
vlc-4
Background Audio
Did you know you can close VLC, and still have the file’s audio play in the background? This is very handy when you want to switch to a different app for a couple of minutes of work, but don’t want to pause playback.
Adjust Playback Speed
You can also adjust the playback speed of a video, if a video is too fast or slow for your liking. Just tap on the clock icon in the playing screen and adjust the slider:
vlc-5
Stream local media with Plex or any other DLNA server
Have TBs of movies, TV shows and other videos on your HDD that can’t be transferred to your iOS device? Install Plex Media Server on your desktop and stream all your videos off your Mac/PC within your local network using VLC. Instructions here.

‘Beats Music’ Streaming Service Launches in the US

6:22 AM
rightnow
As expected, Beats Music has launched its streaming music service to compete with other music services like Apple’s iTunes Radio, Pandora, Spotify and Rdio.
Beats’ music streaming project, codenamed “Project Daisy,” has been in private alpha since quite a while, and had raised $60 million from investors. It had also acquired music streaming service MOG last year, which will form an important part of Beats Music.
The service is run by an impressive set of music personalities including Jimmy Iovine, Dr. Dre and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and its differentiator would be “heavy” curation, and a focus on mobile.
From Beat Music’s blog:
We wanted to build a music service that combined the freedom of an on-demand subscription service – unlimited, uninterrupted streaming and downloads of tens of millions of songs – but layer on top features that would give you that feeling only music that moves you can give. The right song at the right time will give you a chill. Make you pull someone close. Nod your head. Sing in the mirror. Roll down the car window and crank the volume to the right. [..]
[..] But we have these powerful computers in our pocket and computers can learn a lot from what we listen to when. My phone knows when I’m driving. It knows I’m at the gym. It knows I generally listen to hip hop and metal while running and like a wide range of mellower music just before bed.
We wanted to build a service that was more than a server, one that was truly of service to the listener. We wanted to combine the trust that comes from excellent hand-picked music with the personalization that knows you’re an individual and that a handful of stations can’t satisfy all listeners.

The service allows you to make your own playlists or download albums for offline listening. You can also search for your friends playlists and play their playlists.
It offers some interesting curation features such as “Right Now,” which delivers endless playlist for your context based on where you are, what you feel like doing, who you’re with, and what kind of music you’re looking to hear.
The “Highlights” feature lets you stay in the know by following Beats Music’s programmer picks. You can also find playlists based on genres, activities, or your favorite curator in the “Find it” section.
The service is available for free for 7 days. After the trial period, you can subscribe to Beat Music for $9.99 per month for unlimited streaming, downloading from the catalog of more than 20 million songs. Beat Music has a special price for AT&T customers. They can try Beats Music free for 90 days with your AT&T Family Plan then get Beats Music for your entire family — up to five people and ten devices — for $14.99/month.
The service is available only in the U.S. currently. You can download the Beats Music iPhone app for free from the App Store [iTunes link].

Horizon: Smart New Camera app ensures you always take Horizontal videos

6:16 AM
horizon-camera-app
The best way to watch a video on your iPhone is in landscape mode. So it is quite irritating when you end up shooting a video in portrait mode as it’s horrible to watch vertical videos in landscape mode, and irritating to keep switching between landscape or portrait mode.
Horizon, a new Camera app aims to address this by eliminating portrait mode recording.
It lets you record horizontal videos irrespective of how you hold your iPhone. Even if you hold your iPhone in portrait mode or sideways, the app will record horizontal videos by leveling your videos while recording, using the gyroscope. The result is quite cool.
The app includes the following features:
  • Three leveling modes: Just rotate, Rotate & scale, Disabled
  • AirPlay mirroring while recording
  • Multiple Resolutions (Including VGA, HD, Full HD) [Depends on the device. For all of the supported devices Horizon offers 5 options: 1920x1080, 1280x720, 640x640, 640x480 and 480x480. iPhone 4S & iPad 2 only support 640x480 and 480x480.]
  • Different aspect ratios (Square 1:1, Wide 16:9, Standard 4:3)
  • Eight fun filters to choose from
  • Video Library
  • Share your creations to social networks (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter etc)
  • Open your videos in other apps
  • Select Video Quality to save space (High, Medium, Low)
  • Geotagging
  • AF/AE Lock
  • Record videos with front or back camera
Horizon - Shoot & share horizontal videos by Evil Window Dog is available for $0.99. The developers are offering a 50% discount currently.
You have to wonder why it took someone so long to come up with something like this. So should you buy yet another camera app? I would definitely recommend it, it is not only a feature Apple should include in the native app, but you will love the user interface. It’s simple and intuitive.

Twitterrific for iOS updated with live streaming of timelines, goes on sale for $0.99

6:14 AM
twitterific
The Iconfactory, developers of Twitterrific, the popular Twitter client for the iPhone and iPad, have just released an update to the app that adds a bunch of new features including the much-rquested live streaming of timelines.

WSJ: Apple prepping mobile payment service

6:08 AM
apple-patent-mobile-payment
Apple is building the infrastructure for a mobile payment service, claims the Wall Street Journal. Executives such as Eddy Cue, Apple’s VP of Internet Services, have been meeting with other industry leaders to discuss the possibility of Apple processing mobile payments for physical goods and services.
People with knowledge of the situation claim the company has moved executive Jennifer Bailey from her position in Apple’s online storefront to a new role that’ll oversee the development of a payment business. Apple allegedly spoke to five other executives in the payment industry before selecting Bailey for this role.
“Apple is absolutely the sleeping giant in the payments world,” said Denee Carrington, analyst at Forrester Research. “They have the capability; they just haven’t tied it all together.”
A recent Apple patent application reveals how Apple may enable a mobile payment service using its iBeacon technology. In this method, the phone would initiate a secure connection via Bluetooth or NFC to a point-of-service terminal that’ll process the payment. On the phone side of the equation, Apple has overs 400 million iTunes accounts that are tied to credit cards with one click payment authorization. Apple also has Passbook, an app that stores your discount coupons, boarding passes, movie tickets, and more. Apple has allowed Passbook to languish in iOS 7. Instead of a sign that it is sun setting this app, perhaps Apple is keeping Passbook waiting in the wings, while it builds something even better out of it.
Apple has refused to comment on this Wall Street Journal report.

Samsung’s profits sag as competition with the iPhone heats up

6:05 AM
samsung-logo
Samsung posted its first quarterly profit decline in two years, reports Bloomberg. The Korean company’s financials were hit hard by a special employee bonus and slowing handset sales.
Samsung does not announce the number of handsets it sold in the quarter, leaving that figure in the hands of analysts. A report from Daewoo Securities estimates Samsung sold 9 million Galaxy S4 handsets in the quarter. Not only are sales of its flagship handset slowing, Samsung also is being squeezed by low-cost handsets being offered by Lenovo and Huawei. Though growing in numbers, sales of phones in the low-end market won’t bring in significant revenue as profit margins on these inexpensive handsets are slim.
“Earnings will remain stagnant this year as the explosive growth of the past two to three years seems to have ended,” said Lee Sun Tae, a Seoul-based analyst at NH Investment & Securities Co. “Although the lower-end smartphone market will continue to grow, the scale of profit from that segment doesn’t compare to the high-end market so the growth seems limited.”
The drop off in handset sales also effected the company’s Display unit, which saw its operating profit fall 90 percent. Slowing sales of the Galaxy S4 resulted in excess inventory, while a decrease in television set sales affected TV screen shipments.
Samsung is increasingly facing pressure from Apple, especially in emerging markets like China. Samsung is a top seller in China, but its position is being threatened by the launch of the iPhone on China Mobile, the world’s largest carrier.

[Jailbreak Tweak] SubtleLock gives iOS 7 Lock screen a more minimalistic look

6:00 AM
Apple completely revamped the lock screen in iOS 7 to give it a clean and minimalistic look.
The popular Lock screen tweak SubtleLock has been updated for iOS 7, which allows you to give the Lock screen a more minimalistic look as you can see above.
It reduces the size of the clock, stuffs the clock and date in single row, thus giving Notifications more space to breathe.
It offers quite a few configuration options such as the ability to add seconds to the clock, hide the date and clock, hide the Camera grabber icon etc.
It also allows you to hide the Notification Centre and Control Center grabbers at the top and bottom, which results in giving even more space to incoming Notifications as the slide to unlock text is pushed down and Clock & date field is moved to the top of the screen. You can also change the color of the text of the Clock and date fields using a RGB slider.

SubtleLock2
SubtleLock by Michael Poole is available on Cydia for $0.99. If you had purchased it, then you can install it for free.

QuickContacts: Cool New Tweak gives you quick access to your Favorite Contacts from Home screen

5:54 AM
QuickContacts
QuickContacts is a cool new iOS 7 jailbreak tweak that gives you quick access to your favorite Contacts from the Home screen.
The jailbreak tweak essentially takes over the area occupied by Spotlight when you swipe down on the Home screen. You can still access Spotlight by swiping to the left.
If you’ve added photos to your contacts in the Phone app then they will show up when you swipe down on Spotlight or just show the name.
When you tap on the Contact photos, it displays a popup of the contact and gives you an option to call, message or email that Contact.
You need to set the favorites manually by tapping on the icon with the + badge. It would have been nice if the tweak could have pulled the favorites from the Phone app as it would be a pain to manage two lists in the long term.
After you’ve added a favorite, you can always change it by tapping and holding on the icon.
Check out the video walkthrough of the jailbreak tweak in action below:
QuickContacts is a cool jailbreak tweak if you don’t like the idea of add your favorite Contacts to the Notification and clutter it further. However, you need to be on the Home screen to access the Contacts with this tweak, which is a drawback over tweaks like Favorite Contacts 7 that allow you to access the favorites from anywhere in iOS.
QuickContacts is available on Cydia for $1.99. Few issues that you should be aware of before you buy the tweak:

  • It worked well on my iPhone 5, but I was not able to add more than 4 contacts on my iPhone 5, as I couldn’t swipe to the right. So I would recommend iPhone 5s users to hold off buying it until the issues are fixed.
  • If you’ve multiple numbers for a Contact, and want to add one of them as the favorite then it is not possible. It just dials the first number. This is the reason I think the developer should have used the favorite Contacts from the Phone app.
  • You have to add a photo to your Favorite contacts in the Phone app, otherwise it is difficult to figure out which one to tap as it just shows the same icon for all the contacts without photos.
Let me know how it goes in the comments.

Springtomize 3 has be rewritten from ground up, completely re-engineered, and includes support for iOS 7. It allows you to customize the following:

  • Animations
  • App Slider
  • Control Center
  • Dock
  • Folders
  • Icons
  • Lock Screen
  • Pages
  • Status Bar

I will go through each section to give you a good idea of all the things you can customize or tweak with Springtomize 3. The various settings can be configured using the standalone Springtomize app.
Animations:
You can modify the duration of the animations by enabling the Custom Speed toggle (Springtomize > Animations). iOS 7 feels a lot snappier when you move the slider all the way to the left.

App Slider:
This section allows you to customize the following the app switcher or multitasking tray:
  • Hide the icon below the app previews.
  • Resize app switcher pages.
  • You can change the Home action to Respring, which will allow you to swipe on the Home screen card to respring the device.

Control Center:
In this section you can hide Control Center sections such as Quick Launch, Brightness controls, media controls, Airdrop and Settings. You can also hide the line separator.

Dock:
This section allows you to customize your iPhone’s dock. You can do the following:
  • You can hide the iPhone dock
  • Lets you make the background of the iPhone dock transparent.
  • You can resize the icons in the iPhone dock, which can be handy if you want to add 5 icons to the iPhone dock.
  • You can also give the cool coverflow effect to the dock as you can see below.

Folders:
Springtomize 3 lets you enhance iOS folders in a number of ways such as:
  • Enables nested folders, so you can add a folder in a folder thus allowing you to reduce the clutter on your iPhone’s Home screen.
  • You can enable the pinch to close gesture for folders.
  • You can make the background of the folders transparent.
  • You can tweak the animations speed to make the opening and closing of folders snappier.
  • It allows you to change the size of the icon and hide the labels.
  • You can also give the coverflow effect to the apps in the folder.
  • It allows you to change the layout of icons on the Home screen. So you can increase the number of columns and rows (of icons). on the Home screen.

Icons:
  • You can hide the recently updated badge on the Home screen.
  • Lock the layout of the icons to prevent them from being moved.
  • Disable the wiggling animation that occurs after long pressing the Home button.
  • You can also prevent the apps from being uninstalled by disabling the uninstall option.
  • Hide badges from all icons.
  • You can also change the style of the icons by changing the icon image effect.
  • You can change the color and text of the badges.
  • You can also hide Newsstand, Springtomize or any other icons from the Home screen.

Lock Screen:
Springtomize 3 also allows you to customize the Lock screen. So you can do things like:
  • You can hide the grabber for the Camera app.
  • You can change the slide to unlock text with something else.
  • It lets you change the font size and the style of the time and date that is displayed on the Lock screen. This feature is buggy as adding seconds increased the font of the date and time.

Pages:
It also lets you customize Home screen pages. So you can do things like:
  • You can remove the dots for the Home screen pages just above the dock.
  • You can disable Spotlight.
  • You can resize the icons on the Home screen.
  • You can hide labels for the icons. If you plan to give the Cover flow effect to the icons, then it may be a good idea to hide the labels.
  • It allows you to change the layout of icons on the Home screen. So you can increase the number of columns and rows (of icons). on the Home screen.

Status Bar:
Springtomize allows you to customize the Status bar. So you can change the following:
  • You can change the Carrier logo with a custom text string.
  • You can also replace the time that is displayed on the Status bar with a custom string.
  • It also allows you to hide all the status bar indicates by tapping on the appropriate On/Off toggles.

Checkout the detailed walkthrough of Springtomize 3 below:
Springtomize 3 is available on Cydia for $2.99. If you had purchased Springtomize 2 then you can upgrade to the latest version for $1.99.
Please note that readers with iPhone 5s have reported issues with Springtomize 3, so iPhone 5s users may want to wait until the issues are resolved before buying it. There are also some compatibility issues with GridLock and Bigify+, so you will have to uninstall them to avoid running into issues with Springtomize 3.
