iPhone 6: Everything we know so far

10:21 AM
Apple is widely expected to finally make the iPhone’s screen bigger this year with the iPhone 6. The device is rumored to come in two variants — one with a 4.5-inch display, and the other with a 5.5-inch display. Here’s a comprehensive roundup of all the rumors that we’ve seen till now about Apple’s next-generation iPhone.

Display Size
Apple launched the first iPhone with a 3.5-inch display, which was quite big for its time, and then bumped it up to 4-inch with the iPhone 5.

With the iPhone 6, Apple is rumored to catch up with the competition as far as screen size is concerned. Well-sourced publication The Wall Street Journal claims that Apple would release two variants of the iPhone 6, one with a 4.5-inch display while the other with a display bigger than 5-inches. The exact size of the display varies in various rumors, with some claiming 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch variants, and others reporting sizes as large as 6 inches.

A separate report adds that the smaller sized model would support a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080) while the bigger variant would have a 2K (2272 x 1280) resolution.
Here’s what a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 might look like, compared to the 4-inch iPhone 5s. The rendering assumes the following resolution for the two rumored iPhone 6 models:
  • iPhone 6 4.7″ 750×1338 px Aspect ratio 16:9
  • iPhone 6 5.5″ 878×1568 px Aspect ratio 16:9
  • iPhone 5s 4″ 640×1138 px Aspect ratio 16:9

Form Factor
A Bloomberg report from November last year claims that Apple will launch the iPhone 6 with a curved glass display. Specifically, the glass would curve downward at the edges. The WSJ however refuted this claim in a follow up report.

Many rumors suggest that the iPhone 6 will have an ultra-thin form factor. The device could in fact be as thin as 6 millimeters, compared to the iPhone 5s’ 7.6mm thickness, and the iPhone 5c’s 8.97mm thickness. A major portion of the iPhone is taken up by the battery, and with a larger screen, the battery could be spread over a wider area, allowing the phone to become thinner.

Camera
Apple reportedly plans to again use an 8-megapixel camera in iPhone 6, albeit with an improved sensor that will do better image stabilization. A recent patent filing further suggests that the sensor might feature optical image stabilization as opposed to the current software-based stabilization solution.

Processor
The iPhone 6 is expected to feature the A8 chip, the successor to the 64-bit A7 chip found in the iPhone 5s. The A8 chip will reportedly be based on a 20 nanometer process, manufactured at TSMC’s fabs, and will be both smaller and energy efficient than the current generation of A-series chips.
The iPhone 6 could also feature an improved PowerVR GPU from Apple’s long time partner Imagination Technologies, that boasts of up to 50 percent speed boosts. The two companies recently announced that they had extended their licensing agreement.
The RAM is also expected to be bumped to 2GB.

Sapphire Glass
One of the main reasons for iPhone warranty claims is cracked and broken screens. Apple is looking to address this problem by moving from the current Gorilla Glass displays to Sapphire glass with the iPhone 6. The company is preparing to kick off its sapphire manufacturing operations in a big way, procuring furnaces, chambers and other materials to make sapphire in large quantities in its Arizona facility.
Sapphire is already used in small iPhone components, and is 2.5 times stronger than the Gorilla Glass. Here’s a video demonstrating its strength:
Another report adds that the sapphire glass screen might even double up as a solar wireless charger.

Other features
  • An analyst said that the iPhone 6 will ship with 802.11ac Wi-Fi, a standard already supported by Apple’s AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.
  • A Bloomberg report claimed that the touch sensors on the iPhone 6 would be pressure sensitive. That is, the iPhone would sense different levels of pressure based on the intensity of your touch.
Release date
While Apple has typically released new iPhones in September along with a major new iOS version, some reports say that this year, Apple might launch the iPhone 6 in summer, sooner than expected. Another report adds that the two devices would be launched at WWDC, and will ship with iOS 7.2.

Conclusion
This year, Apple seems to be looking at a major refresh of the iPhone lineup, with larger screen sizes and other improvements like increased RAM and a stronger cover glass. Let us know what you think about these features in the comments below.

New iPhone 6 Concept With 4.7 & 5.5-inch Displays Features A Stunning Contour Design

4:34 PM
Last year, Apple took the unprecedented step of releasing two new iPhones simultaneously, introducing both the flagship iPhone 5s and the colorful, cheaper iPhone 5c. But according to numerous reports, the Cupertino company has similar plans for this year, and is supposedly preparing device with a slight display increase on what we’ve seen hitherto, as well as a further model sporting a larger, 5-inch+ panel for a great deal more real estate. Latching onto this, designer Federico Ciccarese, whose incredible talents have been featured on many occasions here at Redmond Pie in the past, has dreamed up yet another beautiful set of renders for the two upcoming handsets. Prepare to be wowed after the break!
The HTC One has been heavily lauded for its stunning unibody design, which clearly took its Taiwanese creator a good few years to get right, and even though the iPhone 5s, which arrived some months later back in 2013, is still very easy on the eye, the One comfortably matches it for overall beauty. But what do you get when you blend them both together? Well, you get Ciccarese’s iPhone 6 concept, and even though we’re regularly impressed by some of the designs thrown out by talented followers of the mobile industry, it’s hard to put into words just how good this one is.

iPhone-6-06-cd

It’s very likely, for the sake of uniformity, that, presuming Apple does intend to release two different-sized smartphones later this year, both will be similar in appearance. After all, with the smaller model expected to pack a ~4.7-inch display and the other likely to exceed 5 inches, one suspects that both will share similar traits in essentially every aspect but size, akin to the iPad mini 2 and iPad Air.
With this in mind, Ciccarese has given both configurations of the ‘iPhone 6′ matching form factors, and even next to the relatively new iPhone 5s, the concept devices look so much more advanced, and could easily be a few generations newer than the current flagship.

The iPhone 5c is expected to take its leave later on this year after a relatively short shelf life, with Apple said to be planning a three-pronged assault on the smartphone market later this year. With Tim Cook’s company having scarcely ventured away from the 3.5-inch display of the original iPhone, this could be a landmark year for the device, and if the handsets released look anything like Ciccarese supposes, we’re in for a real treat!

Here’s how much an iPhone would have cost in 1991

9:32 AM
The introduction of the iPhone has been a huge leap not only in the field of smartphones, but in the broader technology industry as well. An analysis by Tech Policy Daily tries to find out how much the iPhone, with its revolutionary features, would have cost in 1991.

iphone-5s-5c-hero

The analysis is based on the following calculations:
  • Flash storage, back then, cost $45,000 per GB. Considering a 32GB iPhone 5s, the total cost is $1.44 million
  • Processors approximately cost $30 per MIPS (millions of instructions per second) in 1991. The A7 chip can execute 20,500 million instructions per second, so the total cost for a similar processor in 1991 would be $620,000
  • Assuming that the wireless equipment was priced $100 per kilobit per second, and that the present day iPhone gets around 15Mbps over LTE, the radio would have cost $1.5 million
From the report:
Considering only memory, processing, and broadband communications power, duplicating the iPhone back in 1991 would have (very roughly) cost: $1.44 million + $620,000 + $1.5 million = $3.56 million.

The calculations do not take into account features like the camera, software, motion sensors, display and a lot more, but go on to show that even the most basic requirements would have pushed the iPhone’s price into the millions.
It’s important to note that this is just a thought exercise to highlight how technology has not only become better but even cheaper over time. One can only imagine of what the next 15 years hold in store for us in terms of technology.

How to theme iOS 7 Lock screen with cool Rising Time

10:08 PM
Sick of the same old lock screen date and time? Rising Bars fixes that.  It brings a whole new look to your time and date on your lock screen by adding rising bars that fill up incrementally based on the 24 hour time clock.  So naturally there are 3 bars, hour, minute, seconds and the bars will continue to fill with each passing hour, minute,  and second.

risingbars1

Here’s how to get it:
  • First thing you want to download is Cydget. This is going to allow you enable the Rising Bars Cydget
  • Next, add this repo: http://patrickmuff.ch/repo/
  • Then search and install: iOS7 Rising Bars Cydget

Once you have everything installed, you should be able to go into Settings > Cydget and enable your new Cydget lock screen theme.

I think it looks a lot nicer than the original clock and date. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!
